The poetry of material things
July 24- August 6_ 2021 / Spetses
nord proudly presents for the first time artist Marina Koutsospyrou on her solo show The poetry of material things. A series of medium sized, small & extra small artworks made during 2020-2021, portraying moments of our everyday life, simple moments of joy, commenting on our contemporary culture, our habits, private or social moments of our lives. Her color palette is vivid, her paintings are full of light, and a humane-romantic,and almost surreal in some, figurative approach gives us a final result that touches our hearts and brings out our most positive and optimistic inner self. "Developing a unique visual writing that is full of rich narrative and emotion, the painter Marina Koutsospyrou could certainly be described as one of the most dynamic -and hardworking- female vοices that the modern Greek visual art has to show. Studying all her work from her early years until today, one can easily find out that Koutsospyrou does not hesitate to express herself, experiment and feely deal with the topics she finds interesting every time, abstaining from adhering to successful stereotypes and tricks. On the contrary, her work is characterized by a rich - in terms of topics but also technical performance - approach that embraces and unites the familiar realism of reality with the abstract and often overwhelming invasion of imagination and dream within it. Human beings, men, women, children, all placed in the environments they belong to, in urban or natural environments, in environments made of myth and history, surrealism or even romance, become the protagonists of an imaginative painting troupe which leaves you in the end with a gentle sense like a caress of another time that we keep inside us, deeply precious as nostalgia." Retrospective_ Portraits of 1984
21 Mar - 18 Apr 2021 / Online Viewing Room @ARTSY
With this series of 10 portraits, the artist portrays an intuitive true expression of his inner soul, his own personal experiences, fears and his conception of the inevitable. The lines in these paintings are violent, out of order sometimes and the forms seem to decay into darkness. Even in some , at first sight empty spaces in these paintings, you can trace the brushstrokes inside the degrading shades of the black background. In contrast to the above, in a few of the artworks we can see a more strict synthesis, presenting some deeper concepts while at the same time trying to capture the human "aura". The movement of the Cubists, and references to Roualt and Soutine co-exist in thesse portraits, whilst the artist is mainly focusing on materializing his torturing vision, rather than visualizing his painting style.
